Practices on the ground! project is conducted by HEKS/EPER Romania Foundation in partnership with FAER Foundation with the financial support of the program Active Citizen Fund Romania, financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through EEA Grants 2014-2021.
The project aims to increase awareness and involvement of young people who are studying agricultural sciences in monitoring and advocacy activities to ensure compliance by local and national authorities of legal provisions and European directives connected to maintaining soil quality and environmentally friendly soil practices.
Soil quality is not only connected to the civil society categories mentioned above, but also the insufficient protection and preservation of soil quality which can have an overall negative impact over the entire civil society due to an alteration of the drinkable water sources and of the biodiversity.
The environment, as an ensemble of biotic and abiotic factors, is constantly subjected to internal and external stress factors. Beyond incontrollable external factors, the anthropic factor- human activity also has a negative influence through the exploitation factors of agricultural outputs, used technologies or the organisation and administration of farmland.
The pressure generated by the increase of population and consumption have led to the rapid development of new species of plants but also to new synthesis substances for agricultural use. In Romania agriculture is practiced by a significant percentage of the active population (30%) who, in general, has no speciality training nor access to modern technology. The culture and knowledge of soil quality, water and air preservation norms is precarious and the implementation of prevention and control measures, in accordance with the national legislation and European directives is more often than not formal, due to limitations of infrastructure and staff in authorities with competencies in the field.
